In this drill, a "defensive area" is set up in the center of the area using cones.
The situation starts with a pass from the defender on the wing to the attacker. After making the pass, the defender moves to the defensive area to prevent the goal.
The attacker is instructed to try to score at pace, which forces the defender to attempt tackles from the side as well.
After completion, players switch positions.
Variation:
Vary the defender's position from where they make the pass. This allows you to get more defending situations from behind or from the side, depending on your choice.
Quality factors
Quick reaction – Fast movement to the defensive area after the pass.
Defending from behind and from the side – When the attacker is at pace, the defender must be able to guide and prevent the shot without committing a foul.
The attacker's good first touch brings pace to the drill.
Key questions
How can you guide the attacker away from the best scoring area?
How do I attempt to tackle from the side or from behind?
