Divide the whole futsal court into three lengthwise lanes. The side lanes are about five meters wide and the central lane is about ten meters wide. Both goals have a goalkeeper. In each side lane there is one player from each team in their own half and one in the opponent's half. In the central lane there is one player from each team, plus a joker who supports the team in possession. The joker is circled in the diagram.
The goalkeeper starts by passing to their own team. The outfield players stay in their own lanes. The side lane players also stay in the half they started in. The central lane players and the joker can use the central lane along the full length of the court. The ball may move between lanes and halves. The teams try to score. After a turnover, play continues immediately in the other direction. After the ball goes out of play, play restarts with a kick-in from the opponent, and after a goal, with the goalkeeper of the team that conceded.
Rotation: play periods of, for example, a couple of minutes. Between periods, switch the lanes, halves and the joker so that everyone gets to play different roles.
In the second phase of the drill, the players of the team in possession are allowed to swap lanes with each other within the same half of the court. One player comes out of the lane as the other goes into it. The defenders still stay in their own lanes.
- Coaching key points
- Using the width of the court Opening up passing lanes between the lanes Exploiting the numerical superiority in the central lane
- Key questions
- How does the winger's width help the players in the central lane? When is it worth switching play to the opposite side?
