Use half of the court and set up a goal at each end. Each team has two outfield players and a goalkeeper. A third goalkeeper waits on the sideline with the balls and starts the game by passing to one of the other goalkeepers.
Outfield players are limited to a maximum of two touches. The goalkeeper may take part in his own team's attack and has no touch limit in this drill. In this drill, the ball may be passed back to the goalkeeper during the same attack. The teams try to score. After a turnover, play continues in the other direction. When the ball goes out of play, the goalkeeper on the side gives a new ball to the goalkeeper whose team had possession before the ball went out. After a goal, the ball is given to the goalkeeper of the team that conceded.
Rotation: play periods of, for example, a couple of minutes and rotate the three goalkeepers. The outfield players recover between periods. The goalkeeper may use his hands only inside his own penalty area.
In the second phase of the drill, the goalkeeper who starts the play positions himself on the wing channel instead of in front of his own goal. The goalkeeper on the side passes to him there. The goalkeeper can carry the ball forward or pass to an outfield player. The outfield player may use a maximum of two touches.
- Coaching key points
- Goalkeeper providing a passing option Playing 3v2 with the goalkeeper as an extra player Preparing for loss of possession
- Key questions
- Where should the goalkeeper position himself so that the player on the ball has two passing options? When does the goalkeeper stepping up help, and when does it leave his own goal too exposed?
