Description

Full ice, goaltenders in both nets. Players form two lines: one in the left end in the low corner, the other in the right end in the high corner. Pucks are placed at each blue line, and at each end a coach acts as an obstacle in front of the net.

On the coach's signal, the first player in each line starts at the same time. The player skates at full speed along the boards to the opposite end, skates a long turn around the faceoff dot there, and skates back. At the blue line he picks up the puck, carries it past the coach, and shoots on the net he started from.

Rotation: after the shot, the player returns to the back of his own line. Halfway through, the lines switch sides, so the turn is skated in the opposite direction. It's a good idea to keep the lines short so the wait doesn't get too long.

In the second phase of the drill, the coach pressures more actively, and the player must deke before shooting.

Coaching key points
Full speed on the straightaways Skating the turn without losing speed Receiving the puck and shooting in stride
Key questions
How should the turn be skated so that speed doesn't drop? Why is it beneficial to receive the puck while already in motion?
