Description

Play 3v3 in the neutral zone without goaltenders. Each team's three outlet players stand on the blue line: the red team's outlet players on one blue line, the blue team's on the other. The coach feeds the puck into play from the red line. The team that gains possession tries to keep it by protecting the puck, passing amongst themselves, and using the outlet players on the blue line. The opposing team tries to win the puck back.

Play short shifts, for example around 20 seconds, and on each shift the outlet players and the players on the ice switch roles.

In the second phase of the drill, keep score: five consecutive completed passes earns a point, and a pass only counts if it goes to a different player than the one the puck came from.

Coaching key points
Protecting the puck under pressure Skating into open ice to get open for a pass Opening up a passing lane to the outlet player on the blue line
Key questions
Where should you skate when a teammate has the puck? When is it better to protect the puck, and when is it better to pass?
