Description

Set up a square using cone markers. Four players stand at the corners of the square and one defender is inside the square. The corner players pass the ball to each other, either to the adjacent player or diagonally across the square. The defender tries to intercept the pass or touch the ball with their stick. A corner player may only touch the ball once: the pass must go directly.

When the defender wins the ball or the ball goes out of the square, the player whose pass failed becomes the defender, and the defender moves to that player's corner.

The side of the square should be a few metres. Play in rounds of, for example, a couple of minutes each.

In the second phase of the drill, a second defender enters the square and the corner player is allowed to touch the ball twice: reception and pass. When the defenders win the ball, the defender who has been in the middle the longest switches places with the player whose pass failed.

Coaching key points
Passing technique: accurate and crisp pass from the blade Recognising the open passing lane before the ball arrives Reception that sets up the next pass
Key questions
Why does a diagonal pass across the square open up the game when the defender is pressuring on the side? How can you see which passing lane is open before you receive the ball?
