Backcheck 2v1, Developing into 2v2
© CoachTruly.com- Description
Full rink, goalkeepers in both goals. Two red forwards are at the center line, one on each side, and one of them has the ball. There is one blue defender in each end.
The reds attack one goal 2v1 against that end's defender. At the same time, the defender from the other end starts back-checking and tries to get back in time, turning the situation into 2v2. The attack ends with a shot or with the blues winning the ball.
After that, the blues go to the center line and attack the other goal in the same way. The reds stay as defenders, one in each end, and the one further away starts back-checking. There are four players on the rink at a time, and the next group of four switches in approximately every minute, for example.
In the second phase of the drill, the back-checker may only start once the attackers have made their first pass.
- Coaching key points
- Defense: defending alone 1v2, slowing down the attack Back-check: running a direct line back to own goal Division of work between the back-checker and the defender in a 2v2 situation
- Key questions
- What can the lone defender do to help the back-checker get back in time? Which forward should the back-checker take once they get back into the play?
