Description

Two teams, each with two or three lines of three players. Play 3v3 to two goals, with goalkeepers in the goals. Substitutes wait on the sideline.

When a player scores a goal, they exit the rink immediately and their team continues shorthanded. Play continues with a goalkeeper outlet pass. Shifts are short, around half a minute, after which the next three players from each team come onto the rink and the shift starts again 3v3. If a team scores three goals during a shift, it has no players left on the rink and the shift ends.

Play on a smaller rink than the full rink, with goals at each end. Goals are counted for the whole session.

In the second phase of the drill, the goals are moved closer together, so shooting opportunities come more quickly.

Coaching key points
Offense: quick decision between shooting and passing Exploiting the power play when the opponent is shorthanded Finding the open player
Key questions
What should a team do when it has one extra player on the rink? Is it better to shoot right away or pass to the open player when the goal scorer has to exit?
