Description

Mark out an area next to the boards near the corner using two cones. The cones are placed a few metres from the boards and about ten metres apart from each other. The line running from each cone straight to the boards is the goal line, so there is a goal line at both ends of the area. Players form two lines side by side in the middle of the area, a few metres from the boards.

The coach passes the ball into the area toward the boards. This is the signal for the first players in each line to go for the ball and play 1v1. A goal is scored by carrying the ball across either goal line. A new pair starts after a goal is scored or when the ball goes out over the boards.

Each battle only lasts a moment, so turns come around quickly.

In the second phase of the drill, each player has their own goal line, which their opponent defends. The defender must then stop the ball carrier before a certain line.

Coaching key points
Defence: quickly closing the distance Body positioned between the opponent and the ball Slowing down the ball carrier's speed
Key questions
Why is it worth closing the distance quickly? How do you get out of being trapped against the boards and corner with the ball? How do you protect the ball from your opponent?
