Crossing Play

Crossing Play

Description
In this drill, players are divided into two teams. An area is created in each corner of the field from which crosses are delivered. The players' objective is to pass the ball to their team's player in the opponent's corner area, from where the corner player delivers a cross to the goal. However, players don't position themselves ready at the goal, but wait for the cross to be delivered behind the line (white lines in the diagram). As variations, corner players can have unlimited touches, limited number of touches, or limited time within which the cross must be delivered.
Quality factors
Cross type selection – Low, curled, or driven ball to the front of the box, depending on the situation. Cross accuracy – Aimed at dangerous areas (e.g., near post, far post, or penalty spot area). Positioning in goal-scoring situations – Players should fill different areas (e.g., near post, central area, far post) and not run into the same line. Correct positioning and reaction to crosses – Defenders must track attackers' movement and cover goal-scoring areas.
Key questions
How do you select the cross type (low, curled, high) depending on the situation? What kind of runs can we make to disrupt the defense and create space for goals? How do you control space and prevent crosses from reaching dangerous areas?
